We have expanded with newly acquired Gaming Server!


As it turns out, we have a huge proportion of gamers who desire a North American location! Because of this, we have a newly acquired high performance game server, currently in the building stage, with the following specifications:

  • CPU: Intel i7 [ 7700K ] (overclocked)
    • 4-cores / 8-threads – 4.7 GHz / 5 GHz (turbo)
  • Memory: 64 GB DDR4 2400 MHz ECC RAM
  • Disk: SoftRAID 2 x 450 GB NVMe + SoftRAID 1 x 4 TB SATA
  • Network: 500 Mbps bandwidth

Although we do have to offer our sincerest apologies regarding the location of this server. We tried our hardest to obtain one within Kansas, United States, as originally promised but by the time we went to make the purchase, all the servers with our planned, original requirements at said host were no longer available. So instead, we obtained one within Canada approximately 1,600 km away (1000 miles) in the city of Beauharnois. For those knowledgeable in the web-hosting business, you can probably work out which wholesale provider we’ve gone with simply from the information we’ve given in this update 😉

GekkoFyre Networks offers managed hosting though and that’s what sets us apart from many of our contemporary competitors. Plus we almost exclusively cater to the needs and whims of the anthropomorphic community as well as that of individuals who identify as otherkin or therian.

With the server being only 1,600 km away from the originally planned destination, there should be a negligible effect on latency at the most, if any. We are speaking from both experience and as professionals on this.

The release of our gaming services shouldn’t be far off any longer with this server in the building stage! Our wholesaler has told us that it will take up to the middle of next week to configure and get working before finally being provisioned off to our business account, after which we can start doing our own preparations. If you have any ideas, suggestions, critique, or anything else, then we highly recommend that you join our little Discord server and have a fireside chat with our administrator, volunteer staff, and community members!

Lastly, thank you to everyone who voted in the gaming server location poll. Not only was your contribution sincerely appreciated, but it actually had a deciding factor on the direction we would take next at GekkoFyre Networks. We honestly had no idea that there was such a large proportion of gamers who preferred that a server be located in North America over West Europe.

New Feature: “My Donations”!


In preparation of the release of our gaming services here at GekkoFyre Networks, we’ve released a new feature out to all user accounts! Have a look below…

Have others donate funds towards the payment of your web-services, particularly if it’s to cover the cost of your community gaming server!

This feature has been put into use as of right now and all users, existing and new, may now employ it to their benefit whether they have gaming services with us or not. Any donated funds will simply be applied to the credits you have with us, thusly enabling you to use this feature with virtual private servers, domain name purchases/renewals/transfers, SSL certificate purchases, shared hosting, etc.

There is no ‘upper limit’ on how many funds may possibly be deposited but if it does reach quite a high amount, we will discuss options of somehow transferring the funds to their rightful owner(s). This is provided that such an option is possible at any given time, as we see the My Donations being used particularly by clans and other such communities where the funds will be jointly owned by all members.

New Server Status & Health Area; Keep up-to-date…


We are happy to release our new Server Status & Health area of GekkoFyre Networks, where you can keep up-to-date on the latest happenings of outages, system interruptions, downtime, etc. regarding any of the servers and/or front-end interfaces for our entire infrastructure! You will even notice that at the bottom, there is an area where you may subscribe to updates relating to outages/downtime for all or some of the servers that you are interested in.

This section of the site is not entirely complete yet, as we do plan on adding some metrics to it such as the amount of bandwidth that is being processed by GekkoFyre Networks at any one time. This will of course be backdated by a few hours for security reasons. But let us know what you think in our official Discord server!

Apologies for outage on main site; no customer servers affected


We are writing to inform both current and potential customers of the 12-hour outage that occurred with the main site yesterday (05/02/2019 Australian EST), here on GekkoFyre Networks and this Blog, and how we are going to prevent such an event from happening again. Firstly though, we are sincerely apologetic for this transpiring in the first place, but a third-party technician from <unnamed company> was working on our servers and while doing this, made some critical changes at the hypervisor level without consulting the system administrators firstly which then lead to the outage. People do make mistakes, yes, but this individual should have clearly authorized these changes with our technicians firstly. Although it should be stated that no customer servers/accounts were affected by this outage, only GekkoFyre Networks’ own websites.

So moving on from this event, we are sending all third-party technicians who work on our servers a ‘letter of advice’. This will contain all of the guidelines stating what they can and can’t do without having to contact us firstly before making any drastic changes. This warning should therefore, hopefully, prevent such an event from happening once again.

Temporary removal of network status page


Due to interference with our new intrusion detection/prevention system (IDS/IPS) as provided by BitNinja, we’ve had to temporarily take down our network status page over on the main website of GekkoFyre Networks until a solution or suitable replacement can be found; one that will not interfere in the way that the previous page does. We sincerely apologize if you relied on the information provided by this page in any way and will seek to remedy this situation as soon as possible.

BitNinja & Imunify360 as an IDS/IPS


With GekkoFyre Networks being a web-host in need of security solutions and thusly a intrusion detection/prevention system (IDS/IPS), we are proud to say that we are users of Imunify360 and BitNinja. Which one we use at any time depends on the exact requirements of the server in question and whether a particular control panel is in use or not. The former solution though integrates in an excellent manner with CloudLinux as it is by the same development team, along with KernelCare. Both products are exceedingly simple to install, setup, and configure with minimal knowledge on Linux system administration being required. The value of each product offered in terms of pricing is also quite good compared to a few other enterprise security solutions out there, giving a low barrier to entry and thus empowering small business owners such as ourselves with top-quality solutions.

One thing that stands out about Imunify360 in particular is its outstanding integration with cPanel/WHM. Apparently the CloudLinux team have a very close partnership with the cPanel company so this could be the reason as to such sterling compatibility. That said, going forward with such a control panel and security solution combination should mean that you’ll encounter no problems, or at least, only on most rare occasions.

BitNinja is excellent at holding its own for being an independent solution that doesn’t require the installation of any particular control panels; you simply run a single command line instruction and off you go! You’re already setup and managing security-minded actions from the easy-to-use control panel via their official website.

You should notice right away with both IDS/IPS solutions that they will start blocking a great deal of malicious traffic ‘straight out of the box’. This is the sad reality of today’s Internet and system administrators around the globe have to be persistently on guard, ready to defend their clienteles websites and infrastructure.

Almost breaking even; gaming services updates; hosted email


That is indeed correct, we are 50% of the way towards breaking even each month on our expenses with the amount of income we are receiving at current, all thanks to the wonderful and amazing clients we’re starting to take on. We owe our thanks to you! ^,==,^

Among some of the newer services coming up on offer, you’ll soon be able to purchase hosted email at competitive industry rates through us! For this task we are currently thinking about employing the use of the Zimbra Collaboration Suite but if you have your own suggestion then please, by all means let us know. Through this, we are trying to maintain Gmail interoperability, especially for those of you that make use of email on G Suite (i.e. Google Suite by Google Cloud).

We should also be able to start proffering XenoPanel services within approximately three weeks from the time of writing, given how things are currently proceeding. You may see from the screenshots below just how awesome it is shaping up to be!

DNSSEC support and cPanel/WHM; DNS Flag Day


To start off with, what is DNSSEC? The Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC) is a suite of specifications for securing information provided by the Domain Name System (DNS) as used by the Internet. DNS, in its original form, is inherently insecure and DNSSEC seeks to resolve these vulnerabilities through the use of encryption and other, security-minded methods. That said, it is not easy to setup and requires an IT professional to configure and get working.

GekkoFyre Networks is beginning to receive some requests from its clients as to whether we support DNSSEC or not and the short of it is; no, we do not. Whilst most of our infrastructure might be fully prepared for it along with the wholesaler we use for the domain names that we sell through the main site, it all comes down to a specific feature of which we make use of within cPanel/WHM called ‘DNS Clustering‘. This particular part of cPanel/WHM breaks the chain-of-trust in DNSSEC simply due to the fact that it does not support that area of the IETF specifications, despite outcries from many users. There is an outstanding feature request that calls for the implementation of DNSSEC support within this area of cPanel/WHM and according to what the company has told GekkoFyre Networks recently, they will not be implementing it anytime soon.

We are currently looking at alternative methods of supporting DNSSEC currently and we might’ve found just the ticket, although it will take some weeks and maybe even a month or two to implement. So please, stay tuned!

In other news, DNS Flag Day is coming up fast! On this day the IETF along with software vendors around the world will be rolling out the EDNS specification for all up-to-date domain name servers. Suffice to say, GekkoFyre Networks is 100% compliant and totally committed to meeting February 1st, 2019, with success! For any of our clients whom wish to receive more details when testing their websites and/or DNS servers for compatibility and compliance, you only need to go as far as the Internet Systems Consortium page.
